Dat Tran received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from University of Science, Vietnam, in 1984 and 1994, respectively.  He moved to Australia with his family in August 1995. He received his Graduate Diploma in Information Sciences and Ph.D. degree in Information Sciences & Engineering from University of Canberra, Australia in 1996 and 2001, respectively. 

After finishing his PhD thesis, he was awarded an IBM internship to work as a co-op pre-professional computer analyst in handwriting recognition and machine learning by Pen Technologies Group, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, USA, from June 2000 to September 2000. Currently, he is a senior lecturer in Software Engineering at Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering, University of Canberra, Australia.

He has published a number of research papers in biometric authentication, hidden Markov model, fuzzy modelling, spam email detection, language identification and cell phase recognition. He has been awarded a number of research grants in these research areas.

Dr. Tran has served as reviewer for IEEE Transaction on Fuzzy Systems, IEEE Transaction on Systems, Man and Cybernetics Part B, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Pattern Recognition and Bioinformatics journals, and for some international conferences such as ICSLP, KES, AFSS, WSEAS and ICONIP. He has also served as Conference Chair, Session Chair and member of Program Committee for some international conferences.

He is IEEE senior member and WSEAS Australia Chapter board member. His biography has been listed in Marquis Who's Who in the World since 2001 and Marquis Who's Who in Sciences and Engineering since 2006.
